An afternoon of events and activities is scheduled for Friday, May 13, to help Mott Haven residents struggling through these tough economic times sharpen their job-hunting skills, prepare for college, and get an understanding of what social services may be available for them.

East Side House will host a Community Resource Fair at Mitchel Community Center at 210 Alexander Ave on Friday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. to help orient residents on navigating these key issues as governments continue to tighten purse strings.

All events are free to the public.

Between 11 and 3, trainers will help job-seekers create or spruce up their resumes, and prepare for job interviews, at a Job Readiness Workshop. Those interested should call East Side House Settlement in advance, as the workshop is by appointment only.

In addition, representatives from local colleges will be on hand to provide College Readiness Workshops that will cover financial aid, education loans, and applying for college.

At the same time, the year-old Mott Haven community organization, Start Small, Think Big, Inc., helping South Bronx families with financial issues ranging from finding work to getting out of debt, will provide benefits screenings, legal assistance, and financial counseling.

After all the workshops and the serious stuff is done, East Side House will host a carnival for the community, starting at 3 p.m. Works from Education Expo, a five-day competition stemming from elementary after-school programs, will be displayed. Residents will have a chance to speak with representatives of East Side House Settlement about the organization’s social service resources and programs while playing games, eating snacks, and winning prizes.
