A music-themed center with a Bronx flavor will be coming to Melrose soon.

The Bronx Music Heritage Center has been designed to highlight the borough’s rich cross-cultural musical history, and will serve as both an archive and an educational and performance venue.

But the new building on Elton Ave between E. 162nd and E. 163rd St. where the center will be housed, will serve other, less musical purposes, as well. Nearly 300 apartments of affordable housing will be available to the public, along with a space for elder musicians to live and to work, a new high school that will focus on the arts, and a rooftop garden, all with music as the unifying theme.

Space will also be available for elder musicians to live and work, as a fusion of the musical and the residential.

Construction on the building is scheduled to begin in 2013.
