Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center received an award for leadership and innovation in July from the American Hospital Association, a national non-profit group.

The Mott Haven hospital was one of four hospitals nationwide to win a 2012 Quest for Quality prize of $12,500, which Lincoln officials say they will put back into patient services. The annual award takes into account quality of care and patient safety, among its main criteria for selecting award winners.

Lincoln’s chief medical officer Melissa P. Schori attributed the hospital’s ability to focus on patient care more than many other medical centers to “an advanced clinical information system” she said helps establish more effective treatment plans for patients.

The hospital’s executive director, Iris Jimenez-Hernandez, said the center’s focus on “preventing infections, removing barriers to cancer screenings, and providing coordinated care from the primary care medical homes” remain priorities.

Balancing quality care with affordability is another key challenge the American Hospital Association considers, one official from the group acknowledged.

“Hospitals know that one of the best ways to bring greater value to health care services is to improve the efficiency, safety, and effectiveness of the care they provide,” said Rich Umbdenstock, the group’s president at the July 5 award ceremony in San Francisco.
