FreshDirect partners with food pantry
Give Them to Eat, the food pantry of the Spanish Evangelical Church on East 155th Street in Melrose, hosted a holiday meal for 100 people in need on Dec. 19.
FreshDirect provided the food, including turkey, stuffing, potatoes and vegetables, and volunteers from the on-line grocery company prepared and served it.
Food Bank For New York City, the citywide agency of which Give Them to Eat is a member and the advocacy group Health People joined FreshDirect to host the dinner.
FreshDirect has been making donations in the Bronx since winning permission to relocate to Port Morris. It joined Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz in a turkey giveaway for Thanksgiving.
Health People is one of a handful of community-based organizations to back FreshDirect’s move, in the face of concerted opposition to it from other local groups.
Citing the cuts of food stamp benefits in November, Margarette Purvis, president and CEO of Food Bank For New York City, said of the holiday meal,” I’m encouraged to see local community organizations and FreshDirect come together to help Bronx residents in need.”
