The owner of a Mott Haven tax preparation service was sentenced to six months in jail for falsifying tax returns for his corporate clients.
Joseph Barrios Jr., 50, pled guilty on January 31 following a five-year investigation by the state’s Department of Taxation and Finance. Barrios, a New Jersey resident, owns JB Tax Inc., also known as All Options Services Inc., at 371 E. 138th St.
Under the terms of the plea bargain, Barrios will also be required to pay a $20,000 fine and serve five years probation after his release. He will also be barred from preparing tax returns during those five years.
The tax agency recovered over $6 million in fraudulent refunds Barrios claimed on behalf of his clients between 2009 and 2013.
