Rafael Salamanca Sr., the father of City Council Member Rafael Salamanca Jr. of the 17th district, has died from the coronavirus.
Salamanca Jr., whose district covers a large swath of the South Bronx, tweeted a statement announcing his father’s death on Friday night.
Salamanca Sr. was a retiree of the Hunts Point Produce Market and a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters-Local 202.
Salamanca Jr. also thanked the health care workers at Lincoln Hospital and the staff at St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Home and Rehabilitation for their treatment and care of his father.
“My dad was a hard-working family man; whose love for his family and community, in part, paved the way for the work that I have gone on to do,” Salamanca said.
