If you’re a CUNY or SUNY student going back to in-person learning this fall, you’re going to need a COVID vaccination.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the requirement at a press conference Monday morning. He’s also encouraging private schools to follow suite.

“Let’s make a global statement: you cannot go back to school in September unless you have the vaccine,” the governor said.

At the start of the Fall 2020 semester, there were 394,220 students enrolled in the SUNY system and 181,927 students in the CUNY system.

According to the state COVID vaccine tracker website, 60% of New Yorkers 18 years and older have received at least one dose, and roughly 50% are fully vaccinated. In the Bronx, about 411,000 are fully vaccinated. One SUNY campus and three CUNY campuses are located in the Bronx.
