Creatives Rebuild New York is in search of local artists to subsidize. Successful applicants will gain access to stipends and jobs, distributed from the initiative’s total fund of $125 million. The program comes on the heels of a pandemic that cost many artists their careers. Between July 2019 and 2020, the number of employed artists in the city dropped by 69%.
The initiative’s Guaranteed Income for Artists program plans to provide 2,400 New York artists with $1000 monthly for 18 months. Creatives Rebuild New York also intends to provide jobs and $65,000 annual salaries to another 300 artists via its Artist Employment Program.
Creatives Rebuild New York is an initiative run by the Tides Center and backed by funds from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and Ford Foundation. The initiative was created as a response to the pandemic.
Applications are due by March 25 through Creatives Rebuild New York’s application portal, which provides materials in both English and Spanish. To be eligible, artists must live in the state. They can work within a diverse array of traditions and media, including dance, literature, and theater.
