The East Harlem based organization Community Voices Heard is hiring canvassers to go door to door around the city, to ask residents how they want to see $1 million in discretionary funding spent for projects to spruce up their neighborhoods. Canvassers should have excellent communication skills and work well in a team. They will be paid $15 per hour to work the following shifts: Mondays-Thursdays, between 4 and 7 p.m.; Saturdays, noon – 3 p.m.; and Sundays from 3-6 p.m.
Hiring has already begun. End date for the project is April 19.
Canvassers will bring back the results of what they hear, for residents to vote on in this year’s Participatory Budgeting initiative. City Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito first introduced the initiative in Mott Haven in 2011. It calls on residents to voice their views, then for those ideas to be reviewed in neighborhood workshops and meetings, to decide how $1 million in funding from the councilwoman’s budget should be spent.
Last year, all five of the projects funded in the East Harlem section of the Councilwoman’s district. But in years past, enough votes were tallied locally to implement improvements to a popular playground and install new security cameras in public housing complexes, among other projects in Mott Haven.
Applicants should speak fluent Spanish and be able to commit to four shifts per week. Those interested should mail their resume to Aaron@cvhaction.org, with “PB CANVASSER” in the subject line.
