New York City will now make free meals available for all New Yorkers, not just schoolchildren, and 109 of the distribution locations are in the Bronx.
In response to the COVID-19 crisis and the ensuing limited access to food, the city announced Thursday it will distribute three free meals a day at over 430 distribution sites across the city.
Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced new city leadership appointments to address the worsening pandemic.
“Our city is facing an unprecedented threat, and we must respond with a wartime mentality,” said de Blasio.
Kathryn Garcia, head of the NYC sanitation department, has been appointed the COVID-19 Food Czar. Garcia will work with government agencies and food distributors to maintain food access.
Free meals for all New Yorkers is part of Garcia’s food access plan. Starting today, the meals will be available for anyone who needs them, although there are no eating spaces at the listed locations.
The Department of Education has an online lookup tool to find distribution locations. New Yorkers can also text “NYC FOOD” to 877-877 to find a location near them.
Menus change everyday but include food such as sandwiches, carrots, salads, fruit, milk, juice and more. Menus can be accessed online to find out what is being served daily.
Meals are available every day from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
