Six Bronx charter public schools were honored for academic achievement, earning 2019-20 “Recognition Schools” awards from the State Education Department. Of the six, five are located in the South Bronx: Two are in Melrose and three are in Longwood.
The schools in Melrose are Public Prep Boys Prep Bronx, Public Prep Girls Prep Bronx, both located at 192 E. 151st St. The Longwood schools are South Bronx Classical Charter School I, ll, and lll, located at 977 Fox St.
The only charter school in the borough not based in the South Bronx to win the award was the Bronx Charter School for Excellence ll.
“We are proud that Girls Prep Bronx, along with its sister school Girls Prep Lower East Side, made the list two years in a row, and Boys Prep Bronx was one of the 140 news schools named this year,” said Janelle Bradshaw, superintendent of Public Prep Charter Schools. “We look forward to another successful academic year where our commitment to a wholistic education in a single sex environment pushes excellence for all of our scholars and wish the best to the other schools,”
This is the second year that school progress is being measured under the Every Student Succeeds Act, a federal law that grants states flexibility to measure performance in schools K-12.
Following the city-wide school closures due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Bronx public charter schools have launched remote learning programs for students, including virtual math, reading, and history lessons, and music.
