Days after New York officially moved its COVID alert level to “high,” the federal government is offering a third wave of free at-home rapid tests for COVID. The at-home antigen tests can be ordered through the US Postal Service website for all residential households and includes free shipping.
Out of the 37,829 residents of Mott Haven and Port Morris, 32,463 have received at least one dose of the vaccine. Fifty-three people have tested positive in Mott Haven from May 11-17, moving the positivity rate to 3.61% – a higher rate than the borough as a whole. Meanwhile hospitalizations remain low with 3 reported in Mott Haven.
But the existence of at-home testing has rendered the city’s COVID count less reliable because at-home test results are hardly ever reported to the city’s public health officials.
Because the at-home tests are less accurate, the CDC recommends testing again a day after taking an at-home test if the result comes out negative. If the results turn out positive, it is recommended to take a laboratory PCR test, which is up to 98% accurate.
