While countless national elections were decided by razor-thin margins last Tuesday, it was business as usual in the South Bronx, where the Democratic machine continues to roll on.
Democratic incumbents representing Mott Haven, Hunts Point and nearby South Bronx communities in the state Senate and Assembly, overwhelmed their little-known Republican challengers without breaking a sweat, on Election Day, Nov. 8.
Incumbent Assembly members Kenny Burgos, Chantel Jackson, Amanda Septimo cruised to victories.
So did State senators Luis Sepulveda Jr. and Jose Serrano Jr.
Septimo, whose 84th Assembly district takes in Mott Haven, won re-election with 83.3 percent of the vote, to 16.5 for Republican Rosaline Nieves.
In Hunts Point’s 85th district, Assemblyman Kenneth Burgos (D) received 84.7 percent of the vote to Republican Laurine Berry’s 15.1.
Assemblywoman Chantel Jackson (D) breezed to victory in her district, which includes Melrose, with 86.9, to 12.3 for Republican Richard E. Bryan.
State Sen. Jose M. Serrano (D) won unopposed in Mott Haven and East Harlem.
State Sen. Luis Sepulveda (D) beat Antonio Melendez 83 to 14.6 to retain control in his district, which takes in Hunts Point and Melrose.
Democratic congressional candidates Ritchie Torres and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were re-elected with similar ease. Torres, who was first elected in 2020, received 82.5 percent of the vote, to 17.3 for Republican Stylo A. Sapaskis, in the reshaped 15th Congressional district. The recent round of redistricting pushed Torres’ domain farther west to take in Riverdale, while removing Hunts Point and Longwood.
Ocasio-Cortez will take over Torres’ former turf in Hunts Point and Longwood as of January. Until now the 14th congressional district she serves, has constituted western Queens and part of the eastern Bronx. Redistricting, however, has pushed the district down to the East River.
Ocasio-Cortez beat her Republican challenger Tina Forte 70.5 percent to 27.4.
