Two robberies in five minutes lead to immediate arrest
-A pair of daylight robberies on Tinton Avenue led to the immediate arrest of two suspects, police say. An 18-year-old man walking down Tinton Avenue at 147th St. at about 4:25 p.m. on Nov. 15 was approached by two young men who stole his chain and wallet. Minutes later and two blocks away, a 15-year-old was robbed of his wallet and school ID at Tinton Avenue and 149th St., also by two young men. Within 10 minutes of the second robbery, police arrested Shawn Garcia, 18 and Andy Mazara, 19. Garcia had the snatched wallet from the first incident on his person, police said. The pair was charged with robbery, according to the Bronx District Attorney’s office. Both men pled not guilty.
-Two residents of the Mott Haven Houses robbed a 49-year-old man of $50 at gunpoint, police said. The young men approached the victim in the courtyard of the housing complex at 350 E. 143rd St. at 1 a.m. on Nov.16. One of the men brandished a silver handgun and demanded that he “empty his pockets.” Taysean Smith, 18, was arrested and charged with robbery, according to the Bronx District Attorney’s office. Police said Smith has a history of crime since he was 13, and has been arrested at least four times for robbery. Police are looking for the second suspect.
-A 35-year old man was robbed of an iPhone and $10 at his house on East 152nd St. at 2 a.m. on Nov. 16. An unidentified suspect in his mid-30s knocked on the victim’s door, threatened him with a handgun, took away the iPhone and $10 and fled immediately, police said.
-A 28-year-old woman was robbed by her former live-in boyfriend as she was leaving her home on Courtlandt Avenue at noon on Nov. 14, police said. The suspect, a 31-year old man, robbed her of her Burberry sunglasses, an iPhone and $900.
-An 18-year-old man was robbed of designer outerwear while coming home from work the night of Nov. 12. Two robbers approached him about 11:30 p.m. on the 5-train at 125th Street. When the doors opened at 138th Street and Grand Concourse, one of the robbers tore off the victim’s Moncler jacket and Gucci belt, and they ran off into the station. The two items of clothing are worth $650.
-In a mid-day robbery, two robbers accosted two workers at a Melrose store, including an elderly man. The incident occurred on E. 150th St. just after noon on Nov. 13. The suspects, both in their 30s, came in, brandished a gun and yelled profanity-laden insults at the two workers, aged 57 and 87. The crooks then punched the employees and made off with over $500 in cash, the workers’ wallets and cell phones, police said. Police are still looking for the suspects.
-Two men snatched a teen’s cell phone as he walked down Third Avenue at 4 p.m. on Nov. 12. When the unidentified men first asked the 14-year-old victim for his phone, he refused. But when one of the crooks told him the other had a gun, the teen handed over his MyTouch phone. The first robber then snatched the teen’s baseball cap off his head before the two bolted. No suspects have been identified.
-Four men barged into a 60-year-old woman’s Mott Haven apartment but didn’t take anything, police said. At 8pm on Nov. 14, the woman answered a knock on the door to find a young man brandishing a handgun and demanding money. Three more men stood behind him. The woman’s son was hiding behind the open door, unseen. The would-be robbers left, taking nothing.
Burglary
-This was a burglary that wasn’t. A man broke into the basement of a Melrose residential building about 1:35 a.m. on Nov. 13 and was arrested immediately, police said. The robber entered the building’s storage area to steal assorted tools, but the building’s supervisor spotted the suspect on a closed circuit camera and called the police, who arrested the robber as he was leaving the building with drills and sanders. The suspect, identified as Wilfred Nieves, 42, was charged with burglary, according to the Bronx District Attorney’s office. Nieves pled not guilty and is due in court Dec. 12.
-A drunken argument over debt was settled with gadgets, police said. A man and woman argued on the afternoon of Nov. 16 over who owed the other money. At about 3 p.m. the same day, the man came into the woman’s Millbrook Houses apartment and stole her television and a Sony Playstation. No arrest has been made.
-A Melrose deli was the target of a nicotine-addicted thief. The man broke into the store on Trinity Avenue through a side door at 11 p.m. on Nov. 11, police said. The unidentified robber made off with $900 cash, a MacBook Pro, and $700 worth of cigarettes. Police could not specify the perpetrator’s preferred brand.
