The students of PS 5 in Port Morris were honored for their art works at a citywide reception in Queens on Nov. 20.
PS 5 was among eight elementary schools across the city that received honorary certificates at a milk and cookies reception at the Citigroup Building in Long Island City. The students’ works were displayed at the 12th Annual Student Art Exhibition presented by educational non-profit Learning through an Expanded Arts Program (LeAp).
The exhibition began in mid-October and will run through early January. It features work by students who have participated in a program used by the city’s education department, emphasizing the arts as the primary way of reaching children and strengthening their academic abilities.
“This show demonstrates how much children can learn when taught in an arts-infused manner,” said LeAp’s co-founder and executive director, Ila Lane Gross. “They have developed a command of the core subjects while creating beautiful artwork in the process.”
